E.P.A. Makes Its Case on Climate Change

Climate change indicators in the United States

Polls show that tackling climate change is a low priority for the American public. Indeed, a Yale poll found that only 12 percent of Americans were “very worried” about global warming. In the last few days, the Environmental Protection Agency seems to have initiated a public campaign to make clear where it, and the science, stand, stating that the rise in greenhouse gases is a serious problem to be confronted.

On Monday night, the E.P.A. administrator, Lisa Jackson, made the point as a guest on “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart.” And on Tuesday, the agency released an 80-page glossy report called “Climate Change Indicators in the United States” to help Americans make sense of climate change data. That report begins: “Over the last several decades, evidence of human influences on climate change has become increasingly clear and compelling. There is indisputable evidence that human activities such as electricity production and transportation are adding to the concentrations of greenhouse gases that are already naturally present in the atmosphere.” The agency lays out 24 possible indicators of climate change.

Secretly Funding the Climate Denial Machine

- This one chart alone is worth reading carefully by going to the report. It explains so much! Not only are the dollar amounts astonishing, but it’s a map of how to influence politics! These two brothers’ big bucks are speaking in 3 critical categories- denial institutions- $24,888,282, Federal politicians- $5,733,174, and direct lobbying- $37,960,000! Befuddling the public and paying the politicians is the double whammy holding back sanity. If this has already occurred, what will it be like now that the Supreme Court has lifted corporate barriers to politics? - Editor

Denial Borthers

Secretly Funding the Climate Denial Machine
Most Americans have never heard of Koch Industries, one of the largest private corporations in the country, because it has no Koch-branded consumer products, sells no shares on the stock market and has few of the disclosure requirements of a public company. Although Koch intentionally stays out of the public eye, it is now playing a quiet but dominant role in a high-profile national policy debate on global warming. Koch Industries has become a financial kingpin of climate science denial and clean energy opposition. Charles G. Koch and David H. Koch have a vested interest in delaying climate action: they’ve made billions from their ownership and control of Koch Industries, an oil corporation that is the second largest privately-held company in America (which also happens to have an especially poor environmental record). It’s time more people were aware of Charles and David Koch and just what they’re up to.
This report focuses on activities by Koch Industries and its affiliates, as well as the family—and company—controlled foundations which fund organizations that spread inaccurate and misleading information about climate science and clean energy policies.

Earth Hour Invigorated by Copenhagen
People are feeling fatigued by the Climate Change issue, but rather than contributing to a decline in numbers participating in this years Earth Hour on March 27, it has invigorated interest, says Earth Hour Executive Director Andy Ridley. Earth Hour 2010 will take place on Saturday night March 27 at 8.30pm local time. Lights will be turned off for an hour, a “symbolic act” of commitment to a sustainable future. “We have 116 countries participating as of today, and there are still more coming.”

National Geographic- Our Thirsty World

- Climate Today for many years has advocated major conservation, voluntary simplicity, and the end of consumerism and trash as the foundation pieces for controlling our run-away climate, and we are honored to have been able to assist the wonderful National Geographic in their issue on water. We will have water for local and urban ag if we simply cut back on our wasteful tap practices, plus create major energy savings. Please do go get a copy. Water and climate are intertwined at every step. The article we assisted with is entitled “The Last Drop” by Elizabeth Royte. - Editor

High-carbon ice age mystery solved

- Here’s one glitch in climate data that skeptics no longer can use. - Editor
High-carbon ice age mystery solved
How come a big ice age happened when carbon dioxide levels were high? It’s a question climate sceptics often ask. But sometimes the right answer is the simplest: it turns out CO2 levels were not that high after all.
The Ordovician ice age happened 444 million years ago, and records have suggested that CO2 levels were relatively high then. But when Seth Young of Indiana University did a detailed analysis of carbon-13 levels in rocks formed at the time, the picture that emerged was very different. Young found CO2 concentrations were in fact relatively low when the ice age began. Lee Kump of Pennsylvania State University says earlier studies missed the dip because they calculated levels at 10-million-year intervals and the ice age lasted only half a million years. The dip, he says, was triggered by a burst of volcanic activity that deposited new silicate rocks. These draw CO2 out of the air as they erode.

Censorship of “The Ice is Melting” segment?

- When watching the opening ceremonies, the estimated 138 million viewers of NBC were bombarded with car ads- after all, just how many cars can we buy? But then things got worse, far worse.

Olympic opening ceremony

Censorship of “The Ice is Melting” segment?
Olympic commentators provide constant chatter about every detail, but what does it mean when they go silent? The Opening Ceremony had representation from every Native American group in Canada. The theme was sharing things of Canada, with dancing and performance in the magnificent ice-based arena. We heard non-stop commentary, but suddenly the commentators were silenced. Not a peep! Why?

While we have searched the web for explanations, what was happening during that one segment of the ceremonies? It was obvious to us- the Native dancers were showing the entire audience world that their land of ice was melting! The photo here shows solid ice, but in the Ice is Melting section, it melted away as people were still on it. Dancers frantically tried to escape the melting ice, jumping from one piece of ice to another as their ice melted and the growing rivers of ice melt soon took over the whole area. A powerful plea! It seemed immediately that the commentators were not allowed to explain what was being portrayed. A conversation with a technical person working behind the scenes told us later that there had originally been a script for that segment of the performance. Did sponsors, who couldn’t force the Native peoples to not do this painful global warming segment, put the squeeze on NBC to not explain it?

A few days later while watching Olympic skating, the dots seemed to connect. We didn’t think the car manufacturers had a hand in this, but other advertisers might have. The American Petroleum Institute, a coal group, and the “Coalition for American Jobs” had many ads telling Americans that we need to keep using fossil fuels because American jobs depend on it, etc. Ah-hah! Searches online have not lead to an expose on this likely censorship, but what do you think? This would clearly violate the values of the Olympics. - Editor

American Opinion Cools on Global Warming

- A corporate executive reported to us last week  as he travels from boardroom to boardroom that he is hearing more and more execs not from fossil fuel industries making snide remarks about how climate change is a big hoax. This is serious! We all need to continue to disseminate facts about climate change- we are losing ground over people’s minds. - Editor
American Opinion Cools on Global Warming
The Yale Climate Project and the George Mason University Center for Climate Change Communication released the results of national survey that follows up on their 2008 survey.  The survey focused on the public’s belief about global warming and how they’ve changed since 2008. The results are alarming. In the past year public opinion on the topic has cooled; Americans are less convinced that climate change is happening. Americans who believe that most scientists think global warming is happening decreased 13 points, to 34 percent, while 40 percent of the public now believes there is a lot of disagreement among scientists over whether global warming is happening or not.
